I suggest WAITING for more information before heading out to get the
puffin. Ideally, Chris Kargel at Brighton State Park would go over and
find the bird, but I have not been able to reach Chris or anyone else at
the state park. I have gotten the word to four other Livingston County
birders. I do not know yet if any of them will be able to go for a look
earlier than late afternoon. I want to repeat that the bird has not been
seen today. I talked with Theresa on the phone again a few minutes ago
regarding IDing the bird. She said that the bird was NOT near but that
she and her sisters studied the bird through binoculars and had good
looks at it. The bird was diving there most of the day. They had a bird
field guide with them to study. Their bird's bill was bright orange,
almost red. Their bird was definitely not a Surf Scoter, she said--
another bird with an orange bill. Their bird had a white face, and the
top of the head was black. The black went down the back of the head and
across the front under the chin. She said the bird was "small." It
sounds right for Atlantic Puffin, but it hasn't yet been seen by a
birder.

I'll post new information as I get it.
