Birders-

Rick Brigham and I spent the day today 11/28 at New Buffalo searching for Andre Moncrieff's California Gull from Saturday afternoon, without luck. We briefly searched in the late morning at Three Oaks sewage ponds and Forest Lawn Landfill, finding many hundreds of gulls at the former and almost none at the latter (the dump was inactive).

Upon our return to New Bufffalo around 10:45AM we got the call from Tim Baerwald of a Northern Gannet heading south at Tiscornia (post from Berrien Birding Club listserv below, with photolink), which we proceeded to wait for the rest of the day, but the bird did not reach us (we never stopped scanning, and are very confident it did not fly past New Buffalo today).

I have no idea the likelihood of either of these birds being refound, and would appreciate updates if anyone does see either!

Good Birding,

As of this evening I know of no more sightings of the Northern Gannet since it flew past Tiscornia this morning. Birders were present in New Buffalo the entire day and never saw it (they did have Thayers, Iceland and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, no California though), I checked the overlooks between St. Joe and New Buffalo this afternoon with no luck.

Other semi-noteworthy sightings from Tiscornia in the past week include:
Western Grebe-One seen briefly on the 25th, no sightings since then.
Tundra Swan-75 on the 24th.
Ross's Goose-one flyby with 3 Snow Geese on the 24th.

Hooded Merganser-22 on the 19th.
RB Merganser-1740 on the 24th.
Long-tailed Duck-13 on the 24th.
Ring-billed Gull-1219 migrants on the 23rd, 2215 migrants on the 27th.
Glaucous Gull-2 flybys on the 23rd.
Great Black-backed Gull-1 juv. on the 27th.

Black-legged Kittiewake-5 (4 juv., 1 ad.) on the 23rd, 1 juv. on the 27th, all flybys.
Purple Sandpiper-one resting on the pier on the 25th.

Mediocre photos of the Gannet will eventually be up on my Picasa gallery.
