Birders,

My Berrien Birding Club group located an Arctic Tern in juvenile plumage this morning at the Three Oaks wastewater ponds.

We first had only fleeting glimpses as it fed over the north lagoon (the lagoon not visible from the birding observation area), but our patience was rewarded when it flew south and spent time actively feeding right in front of us in the south lagoon. It then flew to the middle lagoon and perched on a railing for several minutes, before returning to feed over the north lagoon.

The Three Oaks ponds are located on Schwark Road, just north of US-12 (1 mile west of Three Oaks). There is a small parking area on the east side of the road adjacent to the ponds. Park here and walk up to the fence of the birding observation area where the middle and south ponds are visible. If the tern is flying over the north pond, it should be visible there as well. Please do not trespass along the north or east boundaries of the ponds.

Good birding,

Kip Miller
