A basic plumaged red phalarope was observed (and photographed) this morning
during the Great Lakes Shoreline Bird Count at Big Sable Point in Mason
County from about 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. The bird was in the shallow waters of
Lake Michigan just 10-20 feet from the shoreline, and 200-250 feet north of
the Big Sable Point Lighthouse. Winds were 10 to 20 mph out of the
south-southwest, with stronger gusts, and the conditions were mostly
sunny. Bob Morman and I lost the location of the bird when we returned to
normal counting for the shoreline count, but it seems likely the bird flew
northward toward the sandy point several hundred yards further north, which
is frequented by gulls. To get to this location, take M-116 north 6 miles
out of Ludington until it dead-ends at the tollbooth and parking lot. It is
then about a 2 mile hike north through the (closed) Pines Campground and on
to Lighthouse Road (gravel). The lighthouse is at the end of the road at Big
Sable Point.
Good Luck !
