Listers,
Today on the way back home from seeing the Livingston County Cattle Egret
flyby the corner of M-59 and Latson Rd I stopped in the Highland Hills
Trailer Park on M-59 and found a lone Long-billed Dowitcher at the sewage ponds
at the back of the property. Highland Hills is on the north side of M-59 in
the extreme west edge of Oakland County. I parked in the back right
(northeast) corner of the park and walked the trail to the north to the ponds.
There were 4 duck species on the west pond and the Dowitcher was on the north
side of the east pond. All of the birds except 2 Gadwall flushed and
disappeared when a couple of hunters walked up from the northwest. These ponds
are visible in the Delorme Atlas and I have been interested in checking what
appear to be the only remaining sewage ponds in Oakland County for quite
some time - looks like I lucked into a good day for it! I am unaware of any
previous records of Long-billed Dowitcher in Oakland.
Good Birding,
Scott Jennex
Ferndale
