14 Greater White-fronted, 84 Snow, 4 pos. Ross's Geese Allegan Co. 3-8-09

Greetings,

84 Snow Geese were viewed distantly north of 116th
Ave. between 62nd St. and 58th St. at the Todd Farm unit of the Allegan
State Game Area this afternoon. This is the highest number I’ve ever
seen here. There was a fairly even mix of both phases and a few juvies.
Amongst them were 4 Ross’s-like Geese. They were considerably
smaller than the snows with smaller heads and bills, but to far away to
assess bill structure any further. Hopefully they will stick around,
preferably closer, so they can be indisputably ID’d by eliminating
the possibility of any intergrade.

14 Greater White-fronted
Geese were grouped along the north side of 118th Ave. between 58th and
59th St. This is the second highest count I have had here.

Lots
of first-of-year species as well today, but nothing unexpected. Mostly
waterfowl as the fields were flooded and attractive to the dabblers.
