Howdy folks,
In southern Monroe County along Lotus Road, I saw 2 ROSS'S GEESE fly in among a flock of Canada Geese. They landed in a corn stubble field on the north side of Lotus Road (where the RR tracks cross the road) for about 20 minutes before the flock flew off to the north. There were hundreds of Canada Geese moving today, with skeins of geese overhead nearly the entire time I was out.
Other interesting white geese seen today included a free-flying white domestic/Greylag thingy, and a wacky looking leusistic Canada Goose.
Interesting gulls seen today included 7 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and a GLAUCOUS GULL at Lotus Road. At least 45+ Great Black-backed Gulls were strung along Lake Erie from Lotus Road up to Pt. Mouillee. Lots of Ring-billed Gulls everywhere.
Early migrants made up the rest of my notable sightings today with hundreds of Red-winged Blackbirds along with smaller numbers of Common Grackles moving. 5 Killdeer were at Erie Marsh Preserve, as were several dabbler ducks including Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Gadwall and Wood Duck. Quite a few Great Blue Herons at Erie Marsh as well as Pt Mouillee.
I only looked at the Headquarters unit of Mouillee, but there were lots of waterfowl, mostly divers, but 30+ Pintail, lots of Black Ducks, Gadwall, Wigeon, 8 Green-winged Teal and lots of coots were also present.
Seems like that most of the Bald Eagles that were present two months ago have moved on, i saw abou
t 9 for the day, mostly at Mouillee.
Spring has returned to southern Michigan,
