I had at least two Hoary Redpolls today in with the 200 plus redpolls at
the feeders. This is after watching the redpolls on and off for most of
the morning. These Hoary's are very white with almost no streaks on the
flanks, white rumps, white undertail coverts, stubby bills and stocky
bodies. One has a pale pink wash to the breast. They other has a buffy
wash to the breast. Be prepared to spend some time to sort through the
birds because they are flighty. By they time you locate a pale bird,
they fly and you have to find it again. There are also some pale
redpolls in the group that have very limited fine streaks on the flanks,
white undertail coverts and mostly white rumps. These birds I am not
sure what they are. They have too much red to the breast and the bill
and head profile seem more Common than Hoary. The birds show up around
8:00 am and are usually here until 3:00ish. There were a few people out
here yesterday morning but they didn't locate any Hoary's. I did manage
to find one around 12:00 though. The house is located on Sunfield Rd.
between Reeder and Tuttle Rd. This is about 3 miles straight east, as
the Redpoll flys, from the Meijer store on M66 south of Ionia. It is the
only place between Reeder and Tuttle Rd on the west side of the road. If
anyone it interested in working on their county list or would like more
info on the redpolls fell free to e-mail me or give me a call.
