White-winged "Yard Bird" Crossbill

Yesterday I checked Calvin College and Greewood Cemetary in Grand Rapids for
WW-Crossbills. Both locations turned up only nominal views...leaving me a
bit disappointed after reading reports like Jonathan Vande Kopple's! The
longest view I had was of a lone male at Greenwood Cemetary, but it was
flushed by a cruising Merlin (although I'm not complaining about seeing a
Merlin cruising over Leonard street!).
Then today, while shoveling my driveway, I heard one in the top of a white
pine across the street! It only stayed briefly but I was able to see it and
hear it well enough. If any winter is one to add WWCR to your yardlist,
this is IT!
While our inboxes may be filling up with WWCR reports (since they seem to be
everywhere this winter), it sure is exciting!
Happy birding.
