White-winged Crossbills...Tuscola and Genesee Counties, 1-3-09

Birders,

Richard Naber & Bill Patterson found White-winged Crossbills today in the towns of Akron (4 birds) and Fairgrove (15) on the Tuscola County Christmas Count. I sneaked into Richard & Bill's territory and got to see them in Akron township park which is at the intersection of Ringle & Akron roads. The birds were feeding on cones at the tops of conifers across the road (west side)from the parking lot. I don't recall exactly where they said the crossbills in Fairgrove were located.

After arriving home tonight, my wife described having seen at 9:00 what could only have been another 5 - 10 White-winged Crossbills feeding on cones at the top of a conifer growing alongside our house...while I was doing the Christmas count in Tuscola county.
