UP Rare Bird Report for February 5, 2009

Encouraging are the growing reports of Evening Grosbeaks across the the Upper Peninsula. After what seems to be several years of low winter numbers and a scarce distribution, there have been several reports in both the eastern and west portions of the peninsula. Notable concentrations have been reported from western Marquette County in recent weeks. Also intriguing is a report of flocks of Red Crossbills from the Porcupine Mountains in the far west. Of course, the real show of late has been the numbers of Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls, which have descended into feeders en mass. Hoary Redpolls seem to be making the rounds as well, though caution is called for when identifying redpolls due to overlap in field marks between the two species. Purple Finches seem to be in better the average numbers along the Superior watershed. Pine Grosbeaks remain scattered and in low numbers. Of course, no finch commentary would be complete without mentioning the strong flight of White-winged Crossbills across the Great Lakes (and beyond!). Numbers remain high, and could grow to truly impressive numbers by spring. And for those who just laugh at the word spring, remember that there are only 6 more weeks until Whitefish Point Bird Observatory began's their hawk watch season. North-bound birds will be coming before too long...
