First, thanks Kip for posting the Cattle Egrets but the location was the
corner of "Elm Valley" and Flynn, not Warren Woods and Flynn. I had two
there on my way to the Smith's Longspur location. I did find out that
some people went there later and had 3 at this location, maybe the
Cleveland road birds from yesterday ended up here. As Jim Lesser posted
earlier, there are numerous Smith's Longspurs along Buffalo Rd. I had
several groups of 5 to 7 individuals that were all Smith's and there was
a large flock of 50 plus birds that was probably 8 to 1 Smith's to
Lapland Longspurs. The birds were mostly seen flying back and forth over
the road and out over the corn stubble to the north and south of the
road. You may need to wait for the birds to come close to get good
looks. There were also large flocks or Am. Golden Plovers in the area.
Many groups of 40 to 80 birds were also flying around and landing in the
flooded field. I did have a Peregrine Falcon chase on flock to the west
of Avery Rd. while headed to Buffalo Rd. Other shorebirds included both
yellowlegs, Solitary, Pectoral, and Dunlin. Yellow-throated Warblers and
Louisiana Waterthrush were along Forest Lawn along with a Pine Warbler.
On the way home I had a flock of 12 White Pelicans circling over the
river backwater area of Douglas and Saugatuck. I saw the birds from
I-196 around 6:00 PM. I pulled over to watch them but did not see them
land. Good birding.
