UP Rare Bird Report for September 18, 2008

 

 

 

Highlights

ROSS’S GOOSE*

LARK SPARROW*

SMITH’S LONGSPUR*

Red-throated Loon

Buff-breasted Sandpiper

Sabine’s Gull

Western Kingbird

Keweenaw County

A lake-watch produced 8 RED-THROATED LOONS on September 14th. Zach Gayk found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER near Rice Lake in Bête Grise on the 13th.

 

Houghton County

Russ Hanson found a family group of 5 ROSS’S GEESE* (1 adult, 4 juveniles) at the Calumet Sewage Ponds on September 16th-17th. The young birds may be possible hybrids. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was also present at Calumet on the 16th.  A molting adult AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was at the Chassell Sewage Ponds on the 13th. 

 

Baraga County

Beth Olson found 2-3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS at the Ojibwa Beach Campground on September 12th. Joe Youngman reports that an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was at Ojibwa Beach on the 14th, along with 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the Baraga Jetty on the same date. 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were on Ojibwa Beach on the 16th. A juvenile GRAY JAY was observed along M-41 near the Cozy Inn on the 12th. 

 

Iron County

Beth Rodgers reported a late YELLOW-THROATED VIREO singing along the Iron River on September 17th. 

 

Marquette County

4 RED-THROATED LOONS were seen migrating past the Presque20Isle Black Rocks on September 17th. 

 

Delta County

Dee Miller reported a good sized flock of 1352 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS migrating over the MSU Tree Research Farm in Pine Ridge on September 17th. Dee also noted large flights of 291 on the 15th, and 768 on the 12th. 

 

Alger County

Scott Hickman had the incredible find of 2 SMITH’S LONGSPURS* in a small clearing on the Laughing Whitefish Peninsula on September 12th. A photo of of these birds can be found in the 2008 photo gallery at www.UPBirders.org. 

 

Chippewa County

There have been several notable sightings at WPBO in the last week. Tim Baerwald found a LARK SPARROW* on September 12th, and the bird was reported again on the 13th. Chris Neri found a WESTERN KINGBIRD on September 17th. Keith Bagnall & Wendy Jones have begun the fall owl banding season and have already caught 2 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS and a BARRED OWL. Other highlights from Whitefish Point include 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS on the 18th; 1 SABINE’S GULL, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 2 unidentified JAEGER SPECIES, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO on the 17th; 52 RED-THROATED LOONS and 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER on the 16th; 1 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (4th WPBO record), 20 unidentified GODWIT SPECIES, and 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS; and 1 BLACK SCOTER, and 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS. In non-Whitefish Pt. news, Brian Allen found a singing CAROLINA WR
EN at the intersection of Parnell & Dillon Street in Sault Ste. Marie on September 14th.
