I encountered at least two Smith's Longspurs in the Shelter Bay area of Alger County at about noon today. Four birds flushed, but two returned to the field where I was able to view them before one flushed and departed while the other remained hidden in the weeds. I was unable to relocate the remaining bird, but will repost if it is relocated.
To reach this area, drive 19.2 miles east of Rte. 41 on M28. You will see a green sign for Laughing Whitefish Point on your left. Turn left and travel 3.9 miles down the road where you will see Utken's mailbox on your right. Sixty yards past the mailbox you will note a grown-over logging road on your left with a small wooden lot marker at its mouth. DO NOT PULL INTO THIS ROAD. It is privately owned and in the process of being revegetated. Walk about 350 yards down the logging road to the open area. The birds were seen in the weedy space between the stands of aspen, as well as to the right of the aspen. Scott Hickman
