UP Rare Bird Report for October 2, 2008
Highlights
PACIFIC/ARCTIC LOON*
SAY’S PHOEBE*
Red-throated Loon
Hudsonian Godwit
Stilt Sandpiper
Iceland
Gull
Parasitic Jaeger
Boreal Owl
Black-backed Woodpecker
Le Conte’s Sparrow
Gogebic
County
A PACIFIC/ARCTIC LOON*
was found along a road, and released into Langford
Lake in the Ottawa National Forest
on October 1st.
Houghton
County
Joe Youngman found a SAY’S
PHOEBE* at the Arnheim unit of the Sturgeon River Sloughs on September 29th.
Birders photographed the bird later that day, but there have been no further
reports.
Baraga
County
Joe Youngman recorded an impressive count of 350+ HORNED
GREBES at the head of the Keweenaw
Bay on September 28th.
Marquette
County
An unidentified JAEGER SPECIES was observed harassing gulls
at the Big Bay Lighthouse on September 26th. David Pavlik saw an
unidentified JAEGER SPECIES at the Presque Isle Black Rocks on the 30th.
David also reported 16 RED-THROATED LOONS at the Big Bay Lighthouse on the 20th.
Zach Gayk had 50 SURF SCOTERS at the Presque Isle Black Rocks on the 28th.
A number of LE CONTE’S SPARROWS have been found at the Presque Isle Bog
walk
with 2 found on the 28th, and 1 juvenile on the 22nd. A
rare report for central Marquette County, Roger Harbin found 5 SPRUCE GROUSE
near Gwinn on the 23rd. Vicki Bennon reported 2 GRAY JAYS at her
feeders in Diorite on the 2nd. Greg Cleary found a late
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER near Wetmore Pond on the 20th. Ryne Rutherford
had 4 SNOW GEESE fly over the Little Garlic River on the 27th. A
handful of CACKLING GEESE have been seen in the City of Marquette in the last week.
Delta
County
43 CACKLING GEESE were observed with the passage of 2000
CANADA GEESE at Peninsula Point on September 28th.
Alger
County
Zach Gayk reported a very early adult ICELAND GULL along
with an additional unidentified “white-winged” Gull at Sand Point on September
27th. Scott Hickman found a LE CONTE’S SPARROW on the Laugh
ing Whitefish Peninsula
on September 21st.
Schoolcraft
County
Beth Rogers reported a GREAT EGRET on Amadon Pond on
September 27th.
Chippewa
County
Perhaps the most notable report from Whitefish Point is of a
BOREAL OWL banded on September 24th. The early arrival of this
species may be suggestive of an irruption year brewing. Other highlights from
WPBO in the last few weeks include 1 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on October 2nd;
3 BLACK SCOTERS and 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 1st; 3 unidentified
JAEGER SPECIES on Septem
ber 30th; BLACK SCOTER and 100+ SURF SCOTERS
on the 28th; 1 PARASITIC JAEGR on the 26th; 35
RED-THROATED LOONS and 15 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS on the 25th; 1
HUDSONIAN GODWIT on the 24th; 32 RED-THROATED LOONS and 1
unidentified JAEGER SPECIES on the 20th; and 1 STILT SANDPIPER and
22 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS on September 19th. For further details
