Birders,
A group of sleep-in birders, including Jerry Sniderman, Daryl Aspery, Jim Fowler Jr., Julie Craves, Darrin O'Brien, my wife Nancy and I, arrived on Belle Isle a little after 9 a.m. and searched everywhere, particularly where Scott had found the King Eider earlier (Jerry got the e-mail on his iPhone), and came up eider-less. The Coast Guard was running around on their very noisy airboat on the north and east end of the island, which tends to scatter the ducks quite a bit. Although we did not find the bird, it could certainly still be in the area, or perhaps be more easily seen from Windsor, Ontario, at times.
Regarging the crossbills reported by Scott, I believe this may be a first for Belle Isle and if they did happen to land I doubt that they'd stay long as there are almost no conifers on the island, so nothing to feed on.

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food.
It doesn't. It just eats another hummingbird.

Listers,
This morning at about 8:15 am I was able to re-find the young King Eider that Nathan Crawford discovered & photographed yesterday at Belle Isle in Detroit. The Eider was flying east into Canadian territory off the southeast corner of the island, east of the Coast Guard station when I found it. The bird was no longer visible when I left, but I expect it to follow the current back to the vicinity of Belle Isle eventually.
Also of note was a flock of about thirty White-winged Crossbills flying low over the trees on the island. I could not tell if they stopped or continued down river.
Good birding,
