The probable Rufous Hummingbird was still visiting Bernie Coleman's
front-porch feeder in Saginaw late this morning (11/14). Roger Wykes
and I were there from 10:45 to 11:20 am and the bird was at the
feeder several times, but never longer than about 20 seconds.
Perhaps our best looks at the bird were when, on a couple of
occasions, it perched at the very top of some shrubs that were near
the north end of the house. I talked briefly with Mr. Coleman. He
was very friendly and obviously pleased to have people come see the
bird. He has put a sign-in sheet on his front porch. Following are
directions to the place, as originally posted by Jerry Ziarno (11/12)
and repeated by Joe Soehnel (11/13).
The residence belongs to Bernie Coleman, 850 N River Rd., Saginaw,
MI. but on the map this is in the village of Shields. To get there,
take M-46 west from Saginaw past the intersection with M-47. Cross
the bridge over the Tittabawassee River and turn north at the next
light on River Rd. His house is only about a 0.5 mile north of M-46
on the east side of the road. The feeder is hung near the front
door. The house sits back from the road and there is a circular
turnaround at the end of the driveway. Do not block the driveway as
workmen may be coming.
