I was informed via a circuitous route yesterday of a late hummingbird coming to a feeder in Shields, MI.? I was able to track down the owner of the residence where the bird was using the feeders.? I got over there today and confirmed what is most likely a Rufous Hummingbird, adult female.? I saw the bird intermittently from about 10:30 AM until 12:00 noon today and it appeared at the feeders about every 10-15 minutes.? It is very skittish and at the last sign of movement it would fly away.? Except it did linger at the feeders once and I was able to get some digiiscoped photos which I have sent to Allen Chartier.
The residence belongs to Bernie Coleman, 850 N. River Rd., Saginaw, MI.? but on the map, this is in the village of Shields.? To get there, take M-46 west from Saginaw past the intersection with M-47.? Cross the bridge over the Tittabawassee River and turn north at the next light on River Rd.? His house is only about a 0.5 mile North of M-46 on the east side of the road.? Birders are welcome but no one is home during the day.? The feeder is hung near the front door.? The house sits?back from the road and there?is a circular turnaround at the end of the driveway.? Do not block the driveway as workmen may be coming.
This may be the first record of a Rufous hummer in Saginaw County or the Saginaw Bay area.
