Thanks to Chris Schumacher for the tip several of us enjoyed birding the new MDOT wetlands in Wexford County this morning. 11 species of shorebirds were present including 3 Hudsonian Godwits. The ponds are in north eastern Wexford Co. on 37 Rd. just north and west of No. 12 Rd. about two miles north of M-42 and three miles east of the village of Manton. There are about seven good sized shallow ponds all with good mud flats and some islands. Unfortunately they have planted hundreds of cedar, willow, red maple and Balsam Fir seedlings in what looks like a wooded wetland restoration. It should be good for shorebirds for at least a year or two before the plantings grow.
Earlier in the morning we also found a pair of Louisiana Waterthrushes in Manistee County on the Manistee River Trail at Arquilla Creek about a mile north of the trail head on Coats Highway where it crosses the Manistee River in eastern Manistee County. We were unable to locate the Cerulean Warblers in the area but had plenty of good resident birds singing including Blackburnian Warbler, Pine Warbler, Mourning Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Wood Thrush, Veery,Yellow-throated and Blue-headed Vireo, Winter Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and loads of Scarlet Tanagers. A beautiful sunny morning to be out.
