UP Rare Bird Report for May 9, 2008
Highlights

Ontonagon
County
Kitt Wulf & Bob Seasor photographed a LARK SPARROW* at their home in Topaz on
May 7th. Kitt & Bob also had a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD at
their home “the Topaz Way-station” on the 5th, with a female joining
it on the 6th.
Keweenaw
County
A SWAINSON’S HAWK and GOLDEN EAGLE were reported on April 30th
from Brockway Mountain.
Houghton
County
Joe Youngman reported a flock of 13 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS
at Pike Bay
at the Chassell Township Park
on May 8th. Nancy Auer reported 5 in flight north of Chassell on May
9th.
Baraga
County
Joe Youngman reports that there are still 25+ pairs of
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in the Baraga/Covington burn.
Marquette
County
Lillian Heldreth reported a probable male WESTERN TANAGER* at her home in the City of Marquette. If
documentation is provided and accepted by the MBRC, it will constitute the
first county record of this species. Scot Stewart reported a flock of 5 WILLETS
at the South Beach
in the City of Marquette on May 3rd. Scot
also had a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in Marquette
on May 8th. Joanna Mitchell found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at Tourist Park
in Marquette
from May 8-9th. A FIELD SPARROW was also present on the 9th.
An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was observed flying over the Compeau Creek gravel pits
on May 4th. A displaying SPRUCE GROUSE was observed along Red Road, north of
the Dead River Basin on May 9th. Also
on the 9th, was a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER north of Sands
Station.
Delta
County
Dee Miller had a flock of 26 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS flying
over the MSU Tree Research Farm on May 4th.
Alger
County
Defying all odds, Ross Iho discovered a deceased 2nd
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW* on her farm in
Trenary on April 29th. The specimen will be sent on the bird
division at UMMZ. Also notable was the discovery of 2 different LARK SPARROWS* on May 3rd.
One was found by Joanie Hubinger in Shelter
Bay, and the second found by Scott
Hickman was only 20 miles to the east near the Grand Island ferry. Scott also found a WILLET
at the mouth of the Au Train River on May 7th.
Chippewa
County
The birding has picked up at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory
with the discovery by Calvin Brennin of a EURASIAN
TREE SPARROW* from May 7-8th. Calvin also had a rufous-morph
SWAINSON’S HAWK on May 8th. GOLDEN EAGLES and NORTHERN GOSHAWKS
continue to be recorded on the hawk watch. Chris Neri reports that WPBO is
having a record-breaking season in owl captures with over 900 owls banded this
season! Recent captures include BOREAL & LONG-EARED OWL and a GREAT GRAY
OWL was observed on May 2nd.
