Birders,

This morning (March 17) two groups of Pine Grosbeaks totalling 6-7 birds were very cooperative along Snow Den Trail in Lapeer Co. (see previous directions), and another 8-10 were present briefly but flew off. One group was near the first line of spruces intersecting the fruit-laden hedgerow and the second group was about half way between the first and second line of spruces/pines. Despite spending two hours here there was no sign of any waxwings of either species (lots of American Robins and two Killdeer). The trees that appeared to have the most fruit were not being used by the grosbeaks, so perhaps the fruit has spoiled beyond what they waxwings prefer and perhaps the waxwings may have moved on? Or, perhaps the three other birders that arrived as I was leaving had better luck with the waxwings...

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food.
It doesn't. It just eats another hummingbird.

  Birders-

The longstanding Pine Grosbeaks at the end of Snow Den Trail in the west unit of the Lapeer State Game Area are still present. This morning, 16 Mar 2008, my Dad and I had about 17 individuals right at the parking lot at the south end of Snow Den Trail.

There was also a flock of about 90 Bohemian Waxwings (and no Cedars) present just east along the famous row of berry trees.

Directions: Take M-24 north of Lapeer to Barnes Lake Rd. Turn west on Barnes Lake Rd and travel 2.75 miles west to Snow Den Trail. Park at the south end of Snow Den Trail and walk the line of berry laden trees to the east.

  Good Birding,
  Caleb Putnam
