Folks -
Checked a bit of the MSU campus before leading an MAS field trip this morning
(Sunday). No waxwing flocks, but did have robins in some crabs on the SW
corner of Wilson Hall.
Toward the end of the field trip at Fenner Nature Center we had a fly-by
group of 8-9 waxwings and the one call I heard was most definitely a Bohemian.
The birds looked to be the same size, so ... They kept flying north toward the
Red Cedar and there seemed to be little potential food at the Arb. (9:30am)
After fortifying myself with a honey cruller and coffee, I decided to find my
own waxwings in Eaton County. I sought out banks, churches, and government
offices in Potterville and Charlotte. (Some realty offices and the entrances to
subdivisions can be good, too.)
Eventually, this microhabitat focus paid off with a flock of 45 Cedars and 1
Bohemian in front of the Eaton County Courthouse and Administrative Offices
building in the Eaton County Government complex west off M50 just north of
Charlotte.
The birds were sitting out in plain view in one of the locust trees and IF
they are feeding on the crabs in front of the building, they have plenty of food
left, plus there are 3-4 more crabs of the same sort on the back side of the
building. (10:45am).
Take care. - Doug
