Greetings,
This morning, Adam Byrne, Phil Chu, Tex wells, and myself spent most of the day birding Pte Mouillee SGA as well as looking for some other recent Monroe County birds.
We started this morning at the location of the previously reported Kentucky Warbler in Petersburgh SGA. We spent roughly 2 hours in this location and did not have the bird. We also swung through the area where a Western Kingbird was reported a couple weeks ago and this bird did not make an appearance either (not surprisingly).
At Pte Mouillee SGA, birding continues to be good as most of the units have habitat. We were able to locate both Black-necked Stilts. Last Friday Adam and I were able to locate the nest and the birds continued to tend to the nest today. They will frequently take turns on the nest so if you are able to locate one of the birds and watch it awhile you should be able to find the nest as well. PLEASE use common sense when observing these birds as it is not often we are this lucky. You do not have to leave the dikes to see the nest.
Other shorebirds present today in the same general area as the stilts were and American Avocet, two White-rumped Sandpipers, both yellowlegs, Dunlin, and Least Sandpiper. We also had a snipe in the Vermet Unit. The southbound shorebirds have begun and the next few weeks should see the return of several other species. If the habitat stays the same we are going to have a great fall of shorebirding.
Good Birding,
Brad Murphy
