Hi birders
Sunday afternoon, on a casual stop by a weedy field I thought I heard a
Dickcissel song. I got out of the car but did not hear it sing again. I went
back 8pm and heard the song a couple more times but could not find the bird.
Finally this mourning at 6:30 am I saw the Dickcissel singing from a dead
branch at the top of a tree. He sang 3 or 4 songs then a Red-wing chased him
off his perch. I stayed 40 more minutes, but did not see or hear him again.
Tough bird! my first for the county.
To find the field head west on M72 out of Traverse City. The light at the top
of tower hill is Bugai Rd., turn right(north), the next road is Hoxie, turn
left, in a ½ mi. there is a sharp (90%) then a left. Between these two turns
is where I saw the Dickcissel. Also present Grasshopper Sparrows, Upland
Sandpipers and a ton of Savannah Sparrows.
Good luck, Gerald B
