A kayaking friend took photos of a bird on April 19, 2008 that I saw only 2
weeks later and ID'd as a Prothonotary Warbler. As it was 2 weeks after the
sighting and the bird was accessible only by canoe or kayak I didn't report
it. I did send the photos to Brian Allen to include in the spring survey.
Much to my surprise the same friend was kayaking again Saturday, June 7, and
not only saw the bird again in the same place but took more photos. The
bird was found in SW Benzie County along the creek outlet between Upper
Herring Lake and M-22 on the left going downstream just above a beaver
lodge. Again, this site is accessible only by canoe or kayak from the
public access on Upper Herring Lake located on Herron Rd. east of M-22 and
paddling to the west down the outlet toward M-22. This is the first
Prothonotary recorded in Benzie Co. Keith Westphal
