Dear birders,
While birding all morning at Muskegon Wastewater Management System with my
friend Marlene Cook we highly enjoyed a pair of *Northern Bobwhite* lying in
the middle of the road around 6:45am. They were actually south of the
facility. If you take Swanson road (it's a dirt one) south of Apple Ave
(46), you come to an intersection of dirt roads where you want to turn right
(west). The birds were well past the radio-controlled airport (to the north
as you're head west), just around the first bend in the road. We watched
them for at least 10 minutes while they lay down, dusted themselves,
rustled, and preened. They hardly patted an eye while we drove by. Marlene
took some pictures, and we'll have to see if/how they turn out!
Also present were many Grasshopper Sparrows, two Upland Sandpipers, Savannah
Sparrows, Orchard Orioles, Vesper Sparrows. Also up at the dikes were
several shorebirds, the highlight was a Semipalmated Plover. For more
details from the area, you should check out the Recent Nature Sightings page
of the Muskegon County Nature Club.
Best birding be with you! ~Phil Vreeman
