Following up on a friend's report of a possibly large hummingbird proved worthwhile. The bird is a very skittish Green Violet-ear. The homeowners have given permission for birders to quietly come on to their property to observe the bird. Take Rte. 41 south out of Marquette. Turn east onto M28. Drive east on M28 for 19.1 miles to Shore Drive. This will be at a good sized sign for Laughing Whitefish Point. Turn left onto Shore Drive. Travel on Shore Drive for 4.1 miles to the Hust's mailbox which will be by a large red barrel. Turn right onto the driveway and follow it past a log home to the house at the end of the drive. Park so as to not block their garage. Go to the right around the garage to their back yard. The bird has been using the daisy-wheel style feeder to the right of the hanging plant on their back porch. Be very careful when approaching the back of their lot by the lake. It terminates in a cliff that is concealed by the trees and vegetation along its edge. This bird visits the feeder only infrequently, and for very short periods of time. It seems to be extremely sensitive to movement. Happy 4th. Scott Hickman
