Lisa Silvey and I drove from Indiana to the U.P. for a four day weekend of birding, covering as much of Chippewa and Luce Counties as we could. It seemed like we had a lot of empty space between bird sightings, but we did manage to find 31 species over the course of the trip.
The best birds of our trip were probably the six or so BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS that Lisa spotted this morning on Riverside Road just south of the Sugar Island Ferry in Sault Ste Marie. The birds were feeding in the berry bushes right across the road from the second house south of the Ferry landing. The house is on the east side of the road, with a park or some other open area on the west side. We both got very good looks at the birds, and would have gotten some decent pictures had we not been hurried along by all the morning traffic. We did not see or hear any Cedar Waxwings in the flock at all.
