Myles Willard and I got a chance to go into the Karn Plant,
Hampton Twp, Bay County today, January 21st, and were rewarded with a second year
Black-legged Kittiwake*, immature Iceland Gull, adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, two Bonaparte's
Gulls, ten Great Black-backed Gulls of various ages, 1000+ Herring Gulls, and 250 Ring-billed
Gulls. Note: The kittiwake had an unusual narrow black band that extended from just below and in the back of one eye up vertically over the top of its head to just below and behind its other eye. All other field marks indicated a near adult kittiwake including black, stubby legs, a petite bill with yellow and black coloration, all-white tail, black primary tips with no mirrors, a slightly gray collar on its nape, and medium gray mantle.

All of the gulls were observed in the area of the mouth of
the discharge channel where they were resting and feeding. This location can be
accessed by parking at the north end of Jones Rd in Hampton Twp and walking
north through the cattail marsh to the 'hot pond' on the Saginaw Bay and then
walking west to the discharge channel.
The walk would be roughly three quarters of a mile to get to this area.

Good birding,

Joe Soehnel
