24 Feb 08

Today several birders saw and heard the Audubon's type Warbler in Lowell, Kent Co. First, around 1PM, it was refound 1/4 mile east of 10696 Fulton (M-21) directly south of a street sign indicating an upcoming right turn to eastbound traffic (follow our tracks into woodland). This appears to be the center of this bird's winter territory, and it has been found here every visit. The bird is less and less responsive to taped Audubon's Warbler chips, but does seem interested in chickadee mobbing calls. It still occasionally visits the feeders at 10696 Fulton, almost always around the noon-1PM hour, but today this occurred at 2:23PM while several of us watched the feeder from the east side of the residence. It comes in very briefly to pick up suet pieces beneath the suet feeder, then quickly leaves to the east.

Several new photos, and a sound spectrogram of a recording I made are available at my blog:

I am still holding out on the subspecies ID of this bird until a specimen analysis is undertaken, but I am sure this bird is not a Myrtle Warbler. The chip note spectrogram has many characteristics of Audubon's as well. I am still soliciting opinions and intend to update the list with sightings and ID information.

Good Birding,
Caleb
