Common Redpolls Kalamazoo County

Common Redpolls have been present near Vicksburg since Dec 14.  In the
beginning it seemed like they were in many places around the state.  If
birders are still looking for them they are here in numbers from 50 to 200
every day.  Twice I have had 500 plus but 200 at once is common.  Since Dec
14 I have banded 1,091.  In the previous eighteen years I had banded 9.  As
of a few weeks ago I had recaptured over 300 individuals several hundred
times.  I will try to do a population estimate after they go back north.  At
this time I would guess a minimum of 2,000 have been using this area.  Many
recaptures are from Dec so they are staying in the vicinity.
     Birders are welcome to visit.  Find the Pitsfield sign at 5616 East "S"
avenue and follow the drive south 800 feet.
