Congrats to Kip on his looks at the towhee, but my brother and I weren't so lucky. Another birder, Terry from South Bend I believe, and ourselves were there from around 10:15 a.m. until just after noon. After leaving earlier, Terry came back from checking some feeders in the neigborhood; perhaps he got it after we left. We did see the Eastern Towhee and the Common Redpolls but no Spotted Towhee. Good luck to the rest of you on this. Please repost if seen, we might try again this weekend if it cooperates further.
Since I have you, on the way home, Jeremy and I stopped at Dutton Park (off Howard ave. just west of the Phizer plant just north of the bridge on River Ave. in Holland). There was a 2nd or 3rd year Greater Black-backed Gull, which has been around since at least Sunday, and 2 Glaucous Gulls, 1 mature and 1 2nd or 3rd winter. The adult was there yesterday. Both immatures were half way between 2nd and 3rd year plummages (late 2nd then?)as suggested by Sibley's. If anyone checks these out and comes up with an Iceland, Little, etc. please drop me a line.
good birding,
mike overway
