Greetings,
Today Jon Wuepper was able to successfully relocate the male Spotted Towhee reported on Friday by John Trapp in a neighborhood in Buchanan. It was not found in the yard where it was originally located, but nearby in a small neighborhood park. Ironically, a male Eastern Towhee is also present at the same location! Alison Village and I saw both towhees at about 3:30 p.m. today in the park where Jon saw it earlier today.
To reach the location, exit US-31 at Exit 5 the Niles Buchanan Road exit and travel west into Buchanan.
Shortly after you pass the McDonalds and Pizza Hut, watch for Liberty Road on the left.
Turn left onto Liberty and then make a left on Rynearson.
Rynearson continues southwest and then angles to the south.
Watch for Huron Drive on the right.
Follow Huron almost to its end and you will see a small neighborhood park on the right.
The Spotted Towhee was frequenting the brushy area on the right side of this small park and Jon put some seed down along the edge of the brushy area. Alison and I observed the towhee and other birds feeding on this seed so Id think if you hang back a bit and are patient, you have a good chance of seeing the bird. (There are also feeders in the yard to the left of this park that should be watched as well
.)
Remember there is an Eastern Towhee here as well and as always, be respectful of the folks who live in the neighborhood, etc.
Good birding,
Kip Miller
