I visited the MUCC facility on Pierce Road yesterday, Monday, December 29th,
just after sunrise. It is north of I-94 on the west side of Pierce Road
before Bush Road. The white-winged crossbills that had been reported there in
recent weeks were still present. They were in the sunlit tops of pines in and
around the main campground area. I walked in from Pierce Road and found them as
soon as I entered the open area where the gun range is on the right and the
lake is off to the left. The were feeding along with large numbers of pine
siskins and red-breasted nuthatches.

I also stopped by Portage Lake (Washtenaw Co.) and saw a nice variety of
waterfowl, but the Black Scoter was not present that had been reported there
recently. There were small numbers of goldeneye, canvasback, ring-necks,
bufflehead, gadwall, and the usual mallards, Canada geese, and swans. Also present
were one ruddy and one pintail.

Good birding to those who can get out this week because of the holiday break!
