Listers,

Lyle Hamilton, Mary Trombley and I saw several White-winged Crossbills at
the MUCC location they have been frequently recently. We walked in from Pierce
Road and spent well over an hour walking the trails and had only heard the
Crossbills. As we were walking back to the cars we had a small group of 6 or so
White-winged Crossbills fly overhead, land in a pine and quietly feed for a
few minutes. We were within sight of the road when we found them. They were
still there when we left at noon. Also present in the campground was a flock of
at least 150 Pine Siskins that held at least one Common Redpoll that we saw
as well as piles of Red-breasted Nuthatches and a couple of Fox Sparrows. We
had stopped at the Eysters previously and did not see Crossbills there.

Directions from Matt Y -" MUCC is near the Waterloo Rec. Discovery Center.
It can be accessed off
Pierce Rd. going north" (from I-94), "on the left side, just before Bush Rd.
Or it can be accessed from a side trail that goes off right near the end of
the Bog Trail. It's a camping area with cabins used by different summer
camp groups through-out the summer, but is really quiet the rest of the year.
The Pierce Rd. entrance is usually blocked off, but you can park and walk in
along a road for about 1/4 mile before getting to the main area. It's actually
a pretty neat area in that it has some decent stands of large pine trees
with lots of cones."

Happy Christmas Bird Count Season,
