Sandy Schacht, Ryan Smith and I had excellent looks at a Baird's Sandpiper
this afternoon at the Branch County sewage ponds, Kinderhook. It was on the
rocks on the west side of the pond behind (north of) the area office. Other
shorebirds present were Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary, Spotted,
Least, and Semipalmated Sandpipers, plus one juv. Bonaparte's Gull.
To reach the facility, take I-69 south to Copeland Road, the southernmost
exit in Michigan. Take Copeland Rd. west to the blinker light in Kinderhook
and turn north. The sewage ponds are on the left (west) side of the road at
the north edge of town. A thick evergreen bush almost totally hides the sign
at the gravel lane entrance, so it can be easy to drive past.
