I observed the Ruff at Pt. Mouillee between 4:30 and 5:30 this afternoon.
When I first arrived, the bird was one of the closest birds. It later moved out
slightly farther, then left when all the shorebirds got spooked by something
and resettled. I didn't relocate it afterwards, but it's likely it's still
around.
Is it possible this bird is a male? The feather edges on the back and wings
were very rusty. Any Ruff experts out there? I posted some poor pictures
that I took of it (some with just my camera, some through my scope), as well as
some photos of a Wilson's Phalarope (3 present today), a Pectoral, and a
Semipalmated Sandpiper. Mixed in with many more common shorebirds were 4 Baird's
Sandpipers, many Stilt Sandpipers, and 1 Red Knot. I was unable to find the
Piping Plover.
