Mich-Listers:
Caleb Putnam tried unsuccessfully this morning (April 26) for the
previously reported Yellow-crowned Night-heron in Muskegon. Here are a
few details regarding Paul Gillan's original sighting 8:00 pm April 24:
Paul was on his bike hurrying home somewhat late. He saw the bird at
the bridge and stopped despite his haste because he knew it was a
night-heron. He knew of Black-crowned's and Yellow-crowned's and that
the latter was the better bird, but he didn't know precisely what to
look for. So he carefully studied the bird for details, some of those
positively seen being white on top of the head and a uniformity of color
all about the body; i.e. definitely no black patch on the back. His
angle did not allow him to see if there was black below the white on the
face. The bird flew west toward the carferry dock area. When he got
home and consulted Sibley ,Paul concluded Yellow-crowned based on these
observations.
