UP Rare Bird Report for April 24, 2008
Highlights
Black Scoter
American White Pelican
Swainson’s Hawk
Golden Eagle
Long-eared Owl
Short-eared Owl
Boreal Owl
Black-backed Woodpecker
“Oregon” Dark-eyed Junco
Western Meadowlark
Keweenaw County
At least 1, possibly 2 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS were observed in Westcoat Fields in Copper Harbor on April 20th. A GOLDEN EAGLE and 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were observed at Brockway Mountain on April 24th.
Houghton County
Max Henschell reported a flock of 8 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS flying over the MTU campus on April 17th. 2 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were observed flying over MTU on April 21st. 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were at Arnheim on April 19th.
Joe Youngman and Lynn Murphy reported an OREGON JUNCO at their home south of Chassel on April 13th. Nancy Leonard found a LONG-EARED OWL along M-41 in the Sturgeon River Sloughs on April 10th.
Baraga County
Joe Youngman reports that he is now up to 21 pairs of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in the Baraga Plains burn. Joe also had a TRUMPETER SWAN at the head of the Keweenaw Bay on April 14th. A male CANVASBACK was at this location on the 19th. Max Henschell had 5 SPRUCE GROUSE on the Baraga Plains on April 17th. Max also reported 2 RUDDY DUCKS at the Baraga Sewage Ponds on April 24th.
Marquette County
A BLACK SCOTER and EASTERN TOWHEE were present in Marquette’s lower harbor on April 17th.
Delta County
Carol Heckman reported 3 AMERICAN WHTE PELICANS flying west over Saunder’s Point in Gladstone on April 16th.
Alger County
Scott Hickman had a GOLDEN EAGLE at the Tourist Park, just west of Munising on April 17th. Jim & Jody Patton reported a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL in Grand Marais on April 12th.
Chippewa County
Migration is really picking up at Whitefish Point with high numbers of both hawks & owls being recorded in the last week. A rufous-morph SWAINSON’S HAWK was seen on April 22nd. Other recent highlights on the hawk-watch of late included 161 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 1306 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS on the 22nd, as well as near daily sightings of NORTHERN GOSHAWKS and GOLDEN EAGLES. Chris Neri reports that WPBO recorded their highest ever number of owls banded on April 21st, with 7 BOREAL OWLS, 122 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, 2 LONG-EARED OWLS, and a BARRED OWL. A SHORT-EARED OWL was reported on April 24th. Charlene Brennan reported 4-5 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on April 20th. Betty Maxson had a SHORT-EARED OWL along M-123 east of Trout Lake on April 17th.
Mackinac County
Betty Maxson had another SHORT-EARED OWL along M-123 east of Moran on April 17th.
