UP Rare Bird Report for September 12, 2007

Migration has taken on a decidedly northern feel in the last few days. The number of tundra breeders arriving has increased, and includes species like Snow Geese, Sabine’s Gull, American Pipits, White-crowned Sparrows, and Lapland Longspurs. What seems to be a low rumble across the eastern US, numbers of Red-breasted Nuthatches are building in the UP. Other irruptive species of note include good numbers of Pine Siskins, with scattered reports of both Red & White-winged Crossbills. Numbers of shorebirds are dropping with end of season species appearing like Golden-Plover and Dunlin being seen. Warbler numbers seem to be starting to diminish as well.
