UP Rare Bird Report for September 5, 2007



 



 



Shorebirds and warblers make up the majority of the birds
being seen in the UP, with 21 species of shorebird and 24 species of warblers
being reported in the region this week. Several observers have reported a good
influx of sparrows migrating into the region. Large flocks of White-throated
Sparrows with smaller numbers of Chipping, Lincoln’s and Juncos have been seen moving
along the north shore of the UP. Other migrants reported this week include
Philadelphia Vireo, American Pipit and Rusty Blackbird.

Houghton
 County



Laurie Binford & Joe Kaplan had 2 RED KNOTS & 5
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the Lake Linden Sewage Ponds on August 28th.
Max Henschell & Zach Gayk reported 3 RED KNOTS at this location on
September 1st along with 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and 50+ BAIRD’S
SANDPIPERS. Debbie Leick reported 3 TRUMPETER SWANS at the Bob Lake Ottawa Nat.
Forest Campground on August 30th. 



 



Baraga
 County



A WILSON’S PHALAROPE along with 2 STILT SANDPIPERS was at
the Baraga Sewage Ponds on August 30-31st. 



 



Marquette
 County



A juvenile FRANKLIN’S
GULL was observed flying by the Big Bay Lighthouse on August 29th.
This is the first county record of this species in Marquette. Also observed in Big Bay
on the 29th were a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER & a RED-THROATED LOON. There
were 2 LE CONTE’S SPARROWS at the Presque Isle Bog-walk on September 2nd.
Rick Baetsen reported 2 SPRUCE GROUSE on the Yellow Dog Plains on September 2nd.

Delta
 County



Wayne Large reported 8 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at Peninsula Point on August 31st. 1
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, along with 19 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS and 19 species of
migrant warblers were seen here on September 1st. A Laughing
Whitefish Audubon trip to Portage Marsh tallied in 4 RED KNOTS, 7 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS, 31 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS and 12 STILT SANDPIPERS. Scot Stewart had 7
GREAT EGRETS at Portage
on September 3rd. 



 



Alger
 County



Scott Hickman had a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER east of the
mouth of the Au Train River on August 30th. Rare for the county, a
BLACK TERN was reported by Amanda Ingraham at Sand Point, just north of the
Pictured Rocks Nat. Lakeshore Headquarters building on August 28th. 



 



Schoolcraft
 County



Rick Baetsen reported 2 SPRUCE GROUSE on the Fox River Truck
Trail on August 31st. Rick also reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER
at the Driggs River Road north of M-28, along with 18 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE near
the State Highway Rest Area west of Seney on September 1st.



 



Luce
 County



Rick Baetsen had 4 SPRUCE GROUSE in the Swamp Lake
area and 2 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS in the Pike Lake
area on August 30th.



 



Chippewa
 County



Louie Dombroski found a basic-plumaged SMITH’S LONGSPUR* at Point Iroquois along the boardwalk near the
lighthouse on September 4th. The bird was observed for only a short
time, and has not been relocated. Rick Baetsen reported 3 SRUCE GROUSE, 1
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 3 GRAY JAYS and a BOREAL CHICKADEE in the Hendrie River Swamp
along Forest Road
3145 on September 3rd. 



Recent highlights from Whitefish Point include 2
RED/RED-NECKED PHALAROPE species on September 5th; 2 MARBLED GODWITS
on the 4th; 1 unidentified JAEGER species on the 3rd; 1
MARBLED GODWIT and 9 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the 31st; 1 unidentified
JAEGER species & 1 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 30th; 3
unidentified JAEGER species, 7 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS along with 3300
RED-NECKED GREBES on August 29th; and 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on
August 28th. As is typical for Whitefish Point this time of year,
WHITE-WINGED & SURF SCOTERS, RED-THROATED LOONS and BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS are
being seen frequently as have good numbers of other dabbling ducks &
shorebirds.
