Folks -
Went birding with Pat Deventer yesterday, Sunday. We covered the shoreline,
more or less, from the North end of Finn Rd in Bay to Tawas SP in Iosco.
Quite a good number of waterfowl and gulls all along the coast, but we did not see
or hear any northern finches.
The single best site was at the East end of the road just south of Linwood Rd
at Linwood, Bay Co. The road is not named in my version of DeLorme. Tawas
Point was quite windy and nearly devoid of birds, about as lifeless as I've
ever seen it.
Nothing too unusual in the way of waterfowl, mostly Common Goldeneye and
mergansers with a few Mallard and Bufflehead thrown in. Did have all three swans
in Bay and Arenac County. Max count of 65 Mute (Linwood), maybe 200 Tundra
(AuGres), 6 of Trumpeter (AuGres and Tawas). Only Trumpeter Swan in Iosco
County. Excellent day for practicing swan ID.
Six raptor species, nothing rare.
Six gulls - about 1000 Bonaparte's all told, at least one, maybe two,
Glaucous at Linwood, and a Lesser Black-backed near Hammel Beach in Arenac.
Adult Northern Shrike along Finn Road near the campground.
Snow Buntings at most of the stops.
A bit nippy, but the sun helped and, as always, it was nice to be out.
Take care. - Doug McWhirter
