UP Rare Bird Report for November 16, 2007
The switch has been flipped- after a long and warm autumn, winter weather has been roaring into the Upper Peninsula. Almost a foot of snow fell in the Michigamme Highlands, and many wetlands are beginning to freeze. Finches are still moving down from Canada, mainly Common Redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks, along with scattered reports of Hoary Redpolls, Evening Grosbeaks, Red Crossbills & Pine Siskins. Bohemian Waxwings have also been reported in various locations in small numbers. While large numbers of Black-backed Woodpeckers have been previously reported in the Baraga Plains burn, high totals have been recorded there in the last few weeks. While most these birds have probably been in the area for a couple of months, it is interesting to note that Duluth, Minnesota has been inundated with Black-backed Woodpeckers moving down the North Shore. At least 5 American Three-toed Woodpeckers have been recorded there as well. Are we setting up for an invasion of northern woodpeckers this winter? A more somber note is of a mass die-off of loons, grebes, ducks & gulls along the northern edge of Lake Michigan & Lake Huron, presumably from botulism. Over a 1000+ waterbirds have been found dead in the last couple of weeks.
I have gotten a few shots of the Cave Swallow & Red Phalarope in the 2007 www.UPBirders.org photo gallery.
