Russ Hanson and I looked today without success for a Spotted Towhee that has
been reported at a feeder in Copper Harbor for at least 4 days and perhaps
present as long as a week. We did not see the towhee ourselves but it was
observed early this morning. The bird has been frequenting Mary Ann
Quackenbush's feeder (across the street (east) of the Laughing Loon) and has
also been seen once by Laurel Rooks at the Laughing Loon. Mary Ann may have
gotten a photo of the bird and will I post to Upbirders.org when she sends
it to me.
Also today at Mary Ann's feeders were locally rare Hoary Redpoll (1-2), a
pair of White-breasted Nuthatches, and a pair of No. Cardinals.
While waiting for the towhee, Russ and I saw a male Three-toed Woodpecker.
The woodpecker was at Benard and First Street -- 1/2 block north of the
Laughing Loon.
Finally, Wescoat's Field was good for a late Savannah Sparrow and two
meadowlarks. Features on the meadowlarks were consistent with western;
yellow malar, barred central retrices, and a generous helping of brown in
rectrix # 3 or 4. One of the birds gave a short "wrink" call while perched
in a tree that matches the western's flight call in Flight Calls of
Migratory Birds (Bill Evans and Micheal O'Brien).
