Today May 7 while doing a regular butterfly inventory at Petersburg State
Game Area (SGA) in western Monroe County I found a Lark Sparrow. I first
heard the bird singing and then saw it on the ground in some nice open
prairie habitat at the SGA around 12:30pm. The area where the bird was
roaming is just East off of Teal Road. Look for a parking area on the west
side of Teal Road and then cross over the road to the East. Hopefully the
bird will stay in the SGA for awhile.

Department of Natural Resources has been doing some management activities at
Petersburg trying to restore the Oak opening prairie habitat there. They
have been doing some pretty nice work and some of the area looks quite
similar to the habitat where Lark Sparrow has bred (breeds?) at Oak Openings
in northwest Ohio near Toledo. Too bad Petersburg SGA is so small. With more
land and the proper management I would bet Lark Sparrow could breed at
Petersburg.
