Listers,

Robert Epstein and I witnessed a juvenile Golden Eagle take a high speed
swipe at a Wild Turkey in northern Lenawee County this afternoon. On M-50 about
midway between US-12 and the town of Tecumseh we were traveling eastbound when
I noticed about 10 Turkeys in the field ahead and on the North side of the
road. We slowed a little as we began to draw abreast of the flock when
suddenly the Golden Eagle flashed into the scene. It went for one of the Turkeys
which leapt into the air and flapped it wings a couple of times as it evaded the
Eagle. The Eagle flared its tail and was braking with its wings as it
attempted contact. After missing, it gained a little altitude and before it had a
chance to circle back (if that was the intent) a Red-tailed Hawk came quickly
into the fray and chased the young Eagle across the field. This lasted for
half a minute and then the Golden Eagle turned the tables and chased the
Red-tail until it flew into the woods in back of the field. At some point we did
actually pull off on the shoulder and both watched the action through our bins.
Not sure where this bird came from but a look at the map will show that this
location is not far from Thorn Lake in Jackson Co or the western Washtenaw
Co locations where the Golden Eagle sightings were late in '06.

Other fun birds for the day included the continuing Washtenaw Co
White-winged Scoter (on Big Portage Lake visible from the Dexter Pinckney Hwy) and
sniping the Spotted Towhee in Holland, Ohio - just outside Toledo.

Good Birding,

Scott Jennex
