Howdy Folks,

A decent sized group of birders (for the UP) were gathered this morning on the breakwall in Grand Marais to see the COMMON EIDER. It is definitely a Common and we were thinking a young female. It was very obliging and came within a few feet of the western edge of the west breakwall. It spent a few hours working that side of the pier before flying over to the east side of the east breakwall (the channel breakwall).
While it is hard to predict what a vagrant bird is going to do, I would not be surprised to see this bird spend some time at this location. It was feeding quite a bit and I think the wing feathers were starting to look a bit ragged, so it may molt at this locale.
I'll contact Jean Carpenter tomorrow evening for an update if nothing has been posted by then.

I have put a couple of shots of the eider in the 2007 photo?gallery at www.upbirders.org

Good Birding
