Birders,
This morning (June 20), around 9:45 a.m, while Atlasing in Monroe County, I
came across a male Blue Grosbeak. The bird was seen briefly, but well, until
it chased off a male House Sparrow that had perched next to it. It was on a
fence around a small farm feedlot at 10095 Hagerman Road (west side...only
wheat fields on east side). To get to this locale, take US Turnpike south
from South Huron River Drive and when you come to Roberts Road on the left,
turn right (west) instead onto Labo Road. Go about 1 mile to Hagerman and
turn right (north). The bird was about 100 yards north of this intersection,
and chased the sparrow out of sight behind the houses toward the southwest.
There isn't much good habitat in the immediate vicinity, but surrounding
these farms/homes there is definitely suitable Blue Grosbeak habitat.
At the "antenna farm" along Hagerman Road to the south of Labo, I found a
single Grasshopper Sparrow and two Dickcissels, along with MANY Savannah
Sparrows and a few Bobolinks.
Good luck!

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food. It doesn't.
It just eats another hummingbird.
