UP Rare Bird Report for June 7, 2007
Normally finch commentary is a thing of wintertime, but there have been a few notable finch sightings in the last week. Both Red & White-winged Crossbills are still present in appropriate habitat in decent numbers, and juveniles of both species have been recorded in a few different counties. Pine Siskins are widespread this summer with roaming flocks & breeding individuals present. And finally it is encouraging to hear of several reports of Evening Grosbeaks, mostly in the western UP after a long drought of this species. Also of note are a growing number of Western Meadowlarks found on territory this summer. It will be interesting to see if last summers Dickcissel invasion will be repeated. Finally, there have been quite a few rare migrants found in the last week. A good reminder that even when June arrives, it pays to still visit some of your favorite migration spots.
