UP Rare Bird Report for July 24, 2007



 



All is quiet in the northern front. The breeding season is
wrapping up quickly, and fall migration is starting up. Several species of
shorebirds have been sighted, including both Baird’s & Stilt Sandpipers.
The first migrant passerines have also been noted, including a few mixed
species warbler flocks. Recent finch sightings include small numbers of both
Red & White-winged Crossbills and a few scattered reports of Evening
Grosbeaks.

Ontonagon
 County



Ryne Ryutherford found 4 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS in Ewen on July
10th. 



 



Houghton
 County 



Joe Youngman reported a male SURF SCOTER at the entrance of
the Portage Lake Entry on July 8th. 



 



Marquette
 County



Greg Cleary had a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 2 GRAY JAYS &
2 BOREAL CHICKADEES at the Northwoods Club on July 12th. 



 



Alger
 County



Making for a rare summer record in Michigan, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has
been summering along the Munising waterfront since at least late June. The bird
was most recently reported on July 22nd. Photos can be found on www.UPBIRDERS.org in the 2007 gallery.



 



Delta
 County



Pat Burke found an AMERICAN AVOCET at Peninsula Point on
July 8th. Wade Knoll reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, a family of
GRAY JAYS & 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS on the Garden Peninsula
on the week of the 10th.



 



Luce
 County



Rick Baetsen reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at Pike Lake
on the 12th. BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were also found at the Pretty Lakes
(7/13) and County Road 423 on the 14th. Rick also reported a SPRUCE
GROUSE near the headwaters of the Two-hearted
 River.



 



Chippewa
 County



Jim Hinson reported a CONNECTICUT WARBLER on Forest Road 3344
north of Trout Lake on July 10th. Rick
Baetsen had BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS at the ORV Trailhead in Paradise and along
M-123 just east of Lost
 Lake on July 12th.
